Keep Your Home Safe This Holiday Season

The Wet Bandits are our favorite Villans AND the Home Alone movie series is a classic go-to for many families this holiday season. However, despite the Christmas nostalgia these movies bring us, home safety is a real concern this time of year. With vacations and holiday gatherings going late into the night, home burglaries spike each winter. In addition, precautions need to be taken to prevent water damage and accidental fires.

Here are some tips to ensure your home stays safe this holiday season:

  1. Be sure to set your alarm! It sounds simple, but this is a easily forgotten task during a hectic time.

  2. Put your lights on timers- both inside AND out.

  3. Make sure a trusted neighbor knows when you will be gone, and can keep an eye out for suspicious activities. Also ask them to bring in any packages that might arrive while you are away.

  4. Put a hold on your mail if you will be gone for more than a few days.

  5. Don't post about your travel plans until you are back home.

  6. Set up water detection alarms, to alert you to any busted pipes. Many will send an alert to your cell phone.

  7. Ensure smoke alarms are in working order.

  8. Unplug unnecessary appliances.

  9. Ensure the Christmas tree is well watered.

  10. Do a walk around your property at night before leaving, and make sure it will look like someone is home (even when you aren't).
